5 Fun Things to do in Albany, NY
It’s definitely a feat when it comes to choosing just 5 attractions in Albany. But somehow, I have narrowed down the list of the things, not to be missed on your first visit to the beautiful city. So, here we go:
1. New York State Museum
When you think of attractions in New York, you would think of fun rides, beaches, theatres and Broadway. Museum is the last thing that comes in our mind, asan attraction, anywhere. But, there are few museums which are truly exceptional. After visiting them, you are nothing but impressed. You are forced to appreciate them for everything they are, and that they exist in such a grand manner. One such museum is New York State Museum.
The museum is home to excellent collections of artifacts, exhibitions, archeology, arts and history of New York State. All of these cannot be explored in a single day. But if you happen to have a day off and are in Albany, pop by the museum to have a great day.
Let’s see, it has a dinosaur display, a bird wing, and replica of the Sesame Street, gemstones found in New York, history of Native American settlements, information on European settlers and a complete Mastodon Skeleton to name just a few, as well as everything you would want to go through, to know about New York City in a single section, pretty impressive huh?

2. The Egg
If you find the name odd, wait till you see and stand in front of this unusual structure. Named for its odd shape, the Egg is a performing arts center. It was designed by Harrison and Abramovitz, and the building is a part of Empire State Plaza.
The Egg is home to two of the most popular theatres in the area – Lewis A. Swyer which can accommodate 450 theatre goers, and Kitty Carlisle Hart Theatre which can have 982 people to showcase the amazing performances.
This one is a must for music lovers where you can enjoy some of the best concerts and performances. With a bit of rich history behind the building, it has become one of the most popular venues in Albany, NY. Plus, the strange architecture draws young and old alike to the Egg.

There are so many restaurants along with a food court serving up delicious food items. You will definitely have a hard time deciding where to eat and what to start with, as there are so many mouthwateringly yummy options.
You won’t believe the number of endless activities available at the Crossgates. They will keep you fully occupied anytime you visit, from theatres to miniature golf and tons of shopping opportunities, it will be difficult for you to keep track of time. Having a hectic day? Go out at the Washington Park for a relaxing stroll. When you visit Albany, NY in summer, do not miss out on this premier park of the city. The park has a splendid atmosphere that you will enjoy for sure.
And, if you own a dog or other pets, Washington Park even has a separate section for your beloved pooch, so that they can stretch their legs and spend their cooped up energy to their heart’s content. Also, remember to pick up after your pet, as there are high fines for not doing so. Fine or not, stepping on or even seeing dog poop all over the beautiful place is not a pleasant sight. So, be a darling and pick up after your dog.

The place offers an engaging guided tour, but if you are more of a solitude seeking person, it’s an amazing place to roam around, listening to audio cues.
And, if that’s not enough for you, there is always the option of taking the excellent guided tour by the experienced employees, who will tell you about interesting facts and stories behind the Capitol.
Besides, the history of the place, the sheer architecture of the building will make you awestruck. From the famous Million Dollar Staircase to beautiful artworks everywhere you look, the gorgeous New York State Capitol is a must visit, whenever you are in the city.

It was a tough call, as there were few great places like Albany Institute of History & Arts, Palace Theatre, and oh, there is the fun tour of USS Slater! Well, they may not have made the cut here, but depending on how close you are to the vicinity of these attractions and the time you have, you can still have them on your list of things to see.
As for now, these are my 5 best things to do in Albany for the first timers out there.
Have a great time!
